HC Deb 24 July 1973 vol 860 c347W
Mr. Dell

asked the Secretary of State for Employment what were the numbers of persons employed in shipbuilding and ship repairing, separately, on Merseyside in 1947, 1955, 1965 and at the latest date for which such information is available.

Mr. Dudley Smith

Estimates of the numbers employed in the area are made for each mid-year and the most recent are for June 1971. The earliest broadly comparable figures are for June 1952. The estimates are based on the Standard Industrial Classification which does not identify shipbuilding separately from ship repairing. Following is the available information.

Estimated number of employees in employment in shipbuilding and ship repairing in the Liverpool travel-to-work area
(thousands)
June 1952 25.8
June 1955 20.4
June 1965 12.9
June 1971 13.9

For 1952 and 1955 the estimates are based on the 1948 edition of the Standard Industrial Classification, for 1965 on the 1958 edition and for 1971 on the 1968 edition. The estimates are therefore not precisely comparable.
