§ Mr. Ronald Bellasked the Secretary of State for the Environment what inquiries he has made into the cause of the pollution of Colnbrook Lake; how many fish were consequently destroyed; to what extent adjacent watercourses were affected; how long the pollution is likely to continue; what hazards to health are involved; what caused the pollution; and who was responsible for it.
§ Mr. Eldon GriffithsThis is a matter for the Thames Conservancy, which took448W action immediately to identify the source of the pollution and to stop the discharge into the lake. The cause is believed to have been an accidental spillage of a biodegradable organic chemical to a surface water drain. I very much regret that the fish in the lake were killed. There was no risk to health or to the safety of public water supply, and adjacent watercourses were not seriously affected. The Thames Conservancy is proceeding with its inquiries and I have asked it to keep me informed.
