Mr. Stainton

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food what discussions have taken place between his Ministry, the British Sugar Corporation Ltd. and Tate and Lyle Ltd. regarding the proposed merger of these two concerns; what are the objectives behind such a move; and how consumer and United Kingdom beet producers' interests will be protected.

Discussions are proceeding with the object of reorganising the refining industry to make it viable and fully competitive in EEC conditions. Interests of consumers and beet producers are prominent in the considerations which will be borne in mind in seeking to reach a satisfactory solution.
