Mr. David Walder

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food whether he will make a statement on the setting up of a committee of inquiry into the export of live animals for slaughter.

I am glad to say that the right hon. Lord O'Brien of Lothbury, PC, GBE, has agreed to accept the chairmanship of the proposed committee, whose terms of reference will beTo review the export trade in live animals destined for slaughter; to consider whether the welfare of such animals is properly safeguarded both in transit and at the place of slaughter: and to report with recommendations. I hope to announce the names of the other members of the committee shortly
