Mr. McNamara

asked the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland if he will make a statement on the number of security incidents involving Belfast Corporation busmen during the past month.

During the period 4th June to 9th July 2973, there have been 93 such incidents. These comprised:

  1. (a) 19 buses hijacked, of which 10 were destroyed, 8 were severely damaged by fire and one was recovered undamaged.
  2. (b) 57 buses badly damaged by stoning.
  3. (c) 11 buses suffered interior damage. (d) 3 armed robberies on buses.
  4. (e) 2 inspectors kidnapped (and later released).
  5. (f) 1 shooting incident. As a result of these incidents, one passenger was killed, 11 were injured and two bus crews were assaulted.
