Mr. Ian Lloyd

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what information he has, for the years 1964–72 inclusive, showing the hours which would have to be worked to purchase, at current prices in each of the years concerned, a representative sample of goods or commodities normally included in the cost of living index, including foodstuffs.

pursuant to his reply [OFFICIAL REPORT, 22nd June 1973], gave the following information:

The price data required for the answer are available only for food items included in the Retail Prices Index. The following table gives the minutes of work required by the average male manual worker to earn gross pay sufficient to purchase representative items of food in the month of October of the years 1964–72.
