HC Deb 09 July 1973 vol 859 c263W
Mr. Bruce-Gardyne

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment if he will identify the economies made in his Department's spending programmes to offset the £15 million mortgage subsidy.

Mr. Rippon

Expenditures for which the Department of the Environment is responsible will be reduced by about £40 million during 1973–74 so as to meet the cost of the new housing measures, including the £15 million grant to building societies, and to contribute to the savings announced by the Chancellor of the Exchequer on 21st May. About half of the savings will come from roads expenditures and about half from miscellaneous local services expenditures.
