asked the Secretary of State for the Environment whether he will take steps to transfer his power to decide the provision of zebra crossings and speed limits (except on motorways) to local highway authorities.

No. Local authorities already have considerable powers in these matters.

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment if he will review the criteria for pelican pedestrian crossings set out in Appendix 1 to circular Roads No. 20/68.

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment if he will publish his most recent assessment as to the relative safety merits of zebra crossings and pelican crossings.

Studies show that at 28 sites where pelicans replaced zebras, accidents have fallen on average by 60 per cent.
