HL Deb 04 July 1973 vol 344 c375WA
LORD MERRIVALE

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Bearing in mind the forthcoming 150th Anniversary of Lord Byron's death at Missolonghi; what decisions have been reached this month in Athens between the Greek and British sections of the Mixed Commission with a view to jointly honouring next year the memory of this English poet and Greek national hero.

THE MINISTER OF STATE, FOREIGN AND COMMONWEALTH OFFICE (BARONESS TWEEDSMUIR OF BELHELVIE)

The Mixed Commission which met in Athens in June noted with satisfaction the plans for the celebration in 1974 of the 150th Anniversary of Byron's death. The British Section of the Commission outlined a project for a major exhibition in Athens for which preparations are already well in hand, and the Greek section mentioned plans for the establishment of a Byron centre at Missolonghi.
