HC Deb 04 July 1973 vol 859 cc142-3W
Mr. Cordle

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food if he will make a statement on the EEC Commission's plan to standardise brewing requirements; and whether this means that English beer may have to conform to recipes devised in Brussels.

Mrs. Fenner

The Commission submitted to the Council of Ministers in June 1970 a proposal for a directive to harmonise the legislation of the six member States on standards for beer. This was based on the laws and manufacturing practices of the original six members. This proposal has recently been withdrawn by the Commission for revision to take account of the enlargement of the Community. The terms of the directive have therefore still to be drafted on a basis appropriate for the enlarged Community.
