HC Deb 02 July 1973 vol 859 cc23-4W
Mr. Grimond

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food what is now Her Majesty's Government's policy on the killing of whales.

Mr. Anthony Stodart

Her Majesty's Government are continuing to work for the implementation by the International Whaling Commission of the proposal for a 10-year moratorium on commercial whaling which was adopted at the Stockholm Conference on the Human Environment. Accordingly, we again supported the proposal for a moratorium at this year's meeting of the International Whaling Commission, but it was not carried. We also supported a proposal for a reduced quota leading to the complete cessation by 1976 of the killing of fin whales in the Antarctic, and this proposal was carried.
