asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether any resolutions have been discussed by the United Nations General Assembly or Security Council advising against investment in the Republic of South Africa or Namibia whilst apartheid and the denial of U.N. authority in Nambia persist; and if so, how national representatives voted on such resolutions, and what Her Majesty's Government have done to implement them.

There have been no resolutions of the General Assembly or the Security Council specifically directed to the question of investment in South Africa or South West Africa (Namibia), but a number of resolutions on Southern African questions have included paragraphs on economic relations with South Africa—for example, condemning activities of "foreign economic interests" there

or calling on States to refrain from economic relations with South Africa. The United Kingdom did not vote in favour of any of these resolutions, and the question of implementing them does not arise.

The most recent resolutions are:

  1. (a) General Assembly Resolution 2923(E) of November 15, 1972, on the situation in South Africa, adopted by 100 votes in favour, 4 (including the United Kingdom) votes against and 21 abstentions.
  2. (b) Security Council Resolution 301 of October 20, 1971, on South West Africa, adopted by 13 votes in favour, none against and two (including the United Kingdom) abstentions.
  3. (c) General Assembly Resolution 3031 of December 18, 1972, also on South West Africa, adopted by 112 votes in favour, 2 votes against, and 15 (including the United Kingdom) abstentions.
