§ Mr. Meacherasked the Secretary of State for Social Services what would be the cost of providing all one-parent families with a benefit equivalent to the widowed mother's benefit, at current rates of £6 plus £2.95 for the first child, £2.05 for the second child, and £1.95 for all subsequent children; and what increase would be required in the weekly national insurance contribution to pay for this.
