HC Deb 03 December 1973 vol 865 c271W
Mr. Woodhouse

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment if he will suspend the operation of the Clean Air Act temporarily in towns where an ample supply of wood or turf is available for domestic fires.

Mr. Eldon Griffiths

I am informed that adequate supplies of solid smokeless fuel at present are available in all areas. However, should the continued enforcement of domestic smoke control present difficulties in any particular area on account of short supply, it is open to the local authority to request a temporary suspension order on demand from my Department. Where necessary such orders can be issued very quickly.
