HL Deb 22 September 1972 vol 335 cc1529-30WA
LORD BARNBY

asked Her Majesty's Government :

Since it is understood that all entry permits into the United Kingdom remain subject to the agreement of the authority concerned,

  1. (a) Whether the currently contemplated permits to Asians from Uganda are to be all limited to a defined period rather than issued forthwith for permanent residence ;
  2. (b) What proportion of current applicants who have been resident in Uganda for three years or more have applied for and been refused Ugandan citizenship.

THE MINISTER or STATE, FOREIGN AND COMMONWEALTH OFFICE (BARONESS TWEEDSMUIR OF BELHELVIE)

United Kingdom passport holders of Asian origin who are being expelled from Uganda are being issued by our High Commission at Kampala with entry certificates for settlement in the United Kingdom. No restrictions on the length of time the holder may spend here are attached.

The answer to the second part of the Question is not known. Such informa- tion would be available only to the Ugandan authorities.
