HL Deb 22 September 1972 vol 335 cc1530-1WA
LORD STRABOLGI

asked Her Majesty's Government :

Whether the Department of Education and Science has notified the Civil Service Union that it raises no objection in principle to the proposal made to it by the union in 1971 that the staffs of the National Museums and Galleries should be issued with free passes valid for all those institutions, if admission charges are introduced.

THE PAYMASTER GENERAL (VISCOUNT ECCLES)

The Civil Service Union were told in a letter of July 28 that their request for free passes to the national museums and galleries for their members employed in those institutions would be answered when details of the charging scheme has been settled with trustees. It would be contrary to usual practice to grant concessions to civil servants in connection with their private use of Government services for which charges are made to the general public.
