HC Deb 26 October 1972 vol 843 c402W
Mr. Peter Rees

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment (1) how many mobile weighbridges capable of weighing TIR lorries are in operation in the United Kingdom;

(2) at which ports fixed weighbridge for TIR lorries are in operation.

Mr. Peyton

There are 17 roll-on/roll-off ports. Adequate fixed weighbridges are available at the following 12:

  • Southampton.
  • Sheerness.
  • Felixstowe.
  • Harwich (Navy Yard).
  • Great Yarmouth.
  • Immingham.
  • Grimsby.
  • Hull.
  • Stranraer.
  • Leith.
  • Preston.
  • Liverpool.

My Department is contributing towards the cost of a fixed bridge at Folkestone and is providing mobile weighbridges at Harwich (Parkeston Quay), Newhaven and Dover. The first of these is now in operation at Dover Harbour East and the other two will be delivered next month. The fifth port, North Shields, has limited traffic and the provision of facilities there is being considered.
