asked the Minister of State for Defence when he now hopes to be able to make a decision on the replacement of the Varsity trainer for the training of aircrew categories other than pilot.

We are currently negotiating a project definition study with Hawker-Siddeley Aviation Limited to confirm the time scales and detailed costs of converting Argosys for this rôle. Final decisions will be taken in the light of this study, which is expected to be completed in about eight months.
