asked the Secretary of State for the Environment how many bore-hole soil samples were taken by the Midland Road Construction Unit on the recommended route of the proposed M42 between Appleby Magna and Trowel] Moor; and how many soil samples were taken on possible alternative routes for this section of the proposed motorway.

One hundred and five. Soil surveys were not considered necessary for the possible alternative routes.

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment how many routes, in addition to the recommended route, were surveyed by the Midland Road Construction Unit, for the proposed northern section of the M42.
