HC Deb 25 October 1972 vol 843 c323W
Mr. Kilfedder

asked the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland whether he will take steps to ensure that schoolchildren in attendance at Roman Catholic schools in Northern Ireland will get a day's holiday on 20th November.

Mr. David Howell

It is not practical to compel schools to close on special occasions. The Ministry of Education has, however, sent the following circular to education committees, governing bodies. managers and principals of recognised schools, institutions of further education and colleges of educationHer Majesty the Queen has expressed a wish that a day's holiday should be granted in all schools and colleges on 20th November to celebrate Her Majesty's Silver Wedding. The Ministry is confident that effect will be given to Her Majesty's gracious wish by the School and College Authorities in Northern Ireland. A holiday granted on 20th November may be regarded as additional to those holidays which are otherwise authorised under the Ministry's regulations.
