HC Deb 24 October 1972 vol 843 c240W
Mr. Normanton

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services whether he is satisfied with the adequacy of the arrangements for providing ambulance services to cover the urban district council area of Romiley and Bredbury; and what consideration he has given, in view of the case of the accident resulting in the death of Richard Arrowsmith on 24th June, 1972, to the need for more comprehensive facilities to be provided in advance of the implementation of proposals for reorganising the Health Service.

Mr. Alison

The Cheshire County Council provides ambulance services for Romiley and Bredbury from stations at Cheadle, Hazel Grove and Duckenfield. In 1974, this responsibility will pass to the regional health authority covering the Greater Manchester area using ambulance resources taken over from the local authority. The accident to Richard Arrowsmith occurred in Denton, where Lancashire County Council is responsible for the ambulance service. Its ambulance reached the accident within six minutes of being called and reached Ashton-under-Lyne General Hospital after a further 13 minutes.
