HL Deb 01 November 1972 vol 336 cc147-8WA
LORD DAVIES OF LEEK

asked Her Majesty's Government:

When the full report of the Channel Tunnel Group will be available to the public and Parliament, and whether the Government will undertake not to pay out any more sums of money for the Tunnel Project until a full study of the alternative Channel Link, namely a bridge, has been investigated, without prejudice.

THE PARLIAMENTARY UNDERSECRETARY OF STATE, DEPARTMENT OF THE ENVIRONMENT (LORD SANDFORD)

The results of the present studies will be available some time next year before a decision is taken whether to proceed to construction. I cannot give the undertaking for which the noble Lord asks. The subject of the studies which the Government have now agreed to complete is a rail tunnel.
