HC Deb 24 May 1972 vol 837 c399W
Mr. Russell Kerr

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what steps he takes to ensure that part-time consultants employed by the National Health Service at 9/11ths of full salary give 9/11ths of a full working week to their National Health Service employers.

Sir K. Joseph

Consultants receiving 9/11ths of full salary are most commonly on maximum part-time contracts and are then expected to devote substantially the whole of their time to the National Health Service and to give it priority on all occasions. Where the duties of a post are less than whole-time, the time required is assessed in accordance with the provisions of paragraphs 61–62 of the Terms and Conditions of Service of Hospital Medical and Dental Staff. The administration of the contract is a matter for the employing authority and the individual doctor concerned.
