HC Deb 09 May 1972 vol 836 c345W
Mr. Marks

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment when he expects the M6 motorway between Castle Bromwich and Great Barr to be open; and if he will make a statement about the delay.

Mr. Peter Walker

24th May. Delay has been due to the need for appraisals and remedial work on structures containing steel box girders.

Mr. Dormand

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment how many miles of central barrier have been erected on motorways since June, 1970; what was the average cost per mile; and how many miles of motorway do not have a central barrier.

Mr. Speed

I regret that up-to-date information is not readily available, but at the end of January, 1972, approximately 300 miles of central reserve safety barrier had been erected at an average cost of £12,000 per mile. Five hundred and sixty miles of motorway had not been so equipped.
