HC Deb 09 May 1972 vol 836 cc329-30W
Mr. Rose

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what was the total sum collected in income tax in each of the last five years; and what sum is expected to be collected in 1972–73.

Mr. Nott

The net receipts are:

£ million
1967–68 3,814
1968–69 4,349
1969–70 4,907
1970–71 5,731
1971–72 6,433
1972–73 (Budget Estimate) 6,646

Mr. Rose

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer how many wage-earners dur- ing 1970–71 were not paying any income tax; and what methods of financial assistance he intends to employ to give them the equivalent of tax relief.

Mr. Nott

The information requested in the first part of the Question is not available.

As for the second part, tax reliefs benefit those below the tax threshold by exempting them from tax. Families with low incomes are in addition helped by the family income supplement, which has recently been increased; and in the longer term they will benefit from the tax credit scheme proposals.
