Mr. Freeson

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science (1) what is her estimate of the total number of pre-1903 primary schools which need replacing by new buildings;

(2) what is her estimate of the total number of pre-1903 primary schools which need to be remodelled, other than those requiring to be replaced by new buildings.

Returns from local authorities in the last two years indicate that there are some 6,000 primary schools of this age in England which require replacement or major improvement.

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what is her estimate of the total capital expenditure required to replace or remodel slum or sub-standard pre-1903 primary schools.
