HL Deb 08 February 1972 vol 327 cc1122-3WA
LORD ALDINGTON

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Which of the road schemes set out in Column 59 of the OFFICIAL REPORT of January 18 and designed to relieve historic towns and cities from trunk road traffic provide for motorways passing within one mile of historic buildings or their environment.

LORD SANDFORD

The schemes which will relieve the sixty-eight historic towns will remove through trunk road traffic from the immediate vicinity of large numbers of historic buildings. It is not possible to say how many will involve motorways passing within one mile of historic buildings since many of the schemes are at only a very early stage of preparation; lines and standards of construction have, therefore, not been decided.
