HC Deb 04 February 1972 vol 830 cc226-7W
Mr. Prescott

asked the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry what complaint his Department received about the Liberian-registered vessel "Golden Eagle" concerning her seaworthiness while berthed in the London Dock in October, 1971; and what action was taken thereon.

Mr. Anthony Grant

The Department was approached by the local representative of the National Union of Seamen following representations to him by members of the crew about the seaworthiness of the ship. Arrangements were made for the complaint to be investigated by an official appointed by the Liberian Government who did so in company with a Surveyor of Lloyds Register of Shipping. In the result it was arranged that the ship sailed in ballast to a repair post instead of to the West Indies for a further cargo. The union representative and crew members expressed themselves satisfied with the Department's action.
