HC Deb 04 December 1972 vol 847 cc302-3W
Mr. Sillars

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if he will publish in the OFFICIAL REPORT the text of the United Nations General Assembly resolution 2908 of 2nd November; and if he will make a statement identifying the parts of the resolution which the Government found to be unacceptable.

Mr. Amery

The text of General Assembly Resolution No. 2908 (XXVII) of 2nd November is available in the House of Commons' Library. Though Her Majesty's Government accept some of its underlying aims, there are many passages which the Government could not support. These include: references to previous resolutions which the United Kingdom did not support certain references to the Special Committee on the Situation with Regard to the Granting of Independence to Colonial Countries and Peoples and approval of its report for 1972; support for the use of force by colonial peoples and peoples under alien domination; encouragement to Specialised Agencies to act unconstitutionally; and extravagnt and unsubstantiated language—e.g. that colonialism poses a threat to international peace and security.
