HC Deb 04 December 1972 vol 847 cc304-5W
Mr. Arthur Lewis

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs how many firm offers of accommodation for Ugandan Asians have been made, as public commitments, to date by each of the European Economic Community countries.

Lord Balniel

Firm offers of permanent accommodation publicly made by the countries concerned are as follows:

West Germany 1,000 persons
Netherlands 300 persons
Denmark 40 persons
Belgium 30 families

In addition, Italy and Belgium are providing transit accommodation.

Mr. Arthur Lewis

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs whether he has received the note from the hon. Member for West Ham, North, dated 29th November 1972, regarding the admission of Ugandan Asians and related matters; and whether he will make a statement.

Lord Balniel

Yes. So far 246 stateless Asians have been admitted into the Netherlands on a permanent basis and 24 into Denmark. Between 1,000 and 2,000 Asians are in transit accommodation in Italy and several hundred including some United Kingdom passport holders, are in Belgium.
