HC Deb 04 December 1972 vol 847 cc321-2W
Mr. Moate

asked the Minister of State for Defence what capital sum payments are made to the estates of members of Her Majesty's forces who are killed on active duty or who die off duty through accident or natural causes.

Mr. Ian Gilmour

When a member of the Armed Forces dies in service, whatever the cause of death, the regulations of the present occupational pensions scheme provide for lump sums to be paid to widows or children. The amounts depend on a number of factors including rank and length of service. Payments under the occupational scheme are additional to payments made by DHSS under the war pensions provisions where death is treated as attributable to military service.

In the second stage of the review of Armed Forces pensions we are currently examining our provisions for benefits on death and invaliding whether attributable to service or otherwise.
