HC Deb 04 December 1972 vol 847 c322W
Mr. Boscawen

asked the Minister of State for Defence what are the current commutation rates at ages 50 and 60 years next birthday for the Armed Forces.

Mr. Buck

Commutation rates vary between 10.52 and 10.444 for Service men aged 50. Rates for those aged 60 vary between 8.85 and 8.715.

Mr. Boscawen

asked the Minister of State for Defence what differences there are in the requirements governing approval of commutation between Armed Forces and those for the police and fire services.

Mr. Buck

The limits to be placed on commutation in any particular pensions scheme will take account of different factors, for example, actuarial calculations of occupational life expectancy, provision for payment of separate lump sums on retirement, and so on. I will write to my hon. Friend about the detailed position.

Mr. Boscawen

asked the Minister of State for Defence what is the reason for the requirements governing approval of commutation for the Armed Forces.

Mr. Buck

Limits are placed on commutation to ensure that each pensioner keeps an entitlement to continuing payments.
