asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what estimate he has made of the number of people suffering from glaucoma in this country.

Mr. Alison

We have no direct information on which I could base such an estimate. I understand, however, that two local surveys made in the last 10 years would point to a probable incidence of glaucoma in England and Wales of about nine persons per 1,000 of those aged over 40.
