HC Deb 30 November 1971 vol 827 c89W
Mr. Bishop

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what further action he is taking to improve prison conditions, and particularly the possibility of ending the use of chamber pots and slopping out.

Mr. Carlisle

My right hon. Friend is continuing the programme for the modernisation, renovation, improvement and maintenance of existing prisons, borstals and detention centres and for the provision of new buildings within existing perimeters. About £6 million will be spent on this work in England and Wales in the current financial year.

The new establishments included in the current building programme are so designed that slopping out will not be necessary but I cannot foresee the end of the practice in the majority of existing prisons.
