HC Deb 25 May 1971 vol 818 cc90-1W
70. Mr. O'Halloran

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what level of expenditure is proposed for the next three years on research into the causes and treatment of mental illness and mental retardation.

Mrs. Thatcher

It is not possible to forecast expenditure. The Medical Research Council supports a wide programme of research on mental disorders, including mental retardation, associated psychological studies and basic studies in neurobiology, at an expenditure of some £1,627,400 in 1970–71.

Other substantial provision in this field from Government sources is made by the Health Departments and hospital boards and through the University Grants Committee's funds in universities and medical schools. Useful support is provided by several voluntary agencies.
