HC Deb 25 May 1971 vol 818 c91W
Mr. Elystan Morgan

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science if, in view of the fact that French will remain the official language of the European Economic Community, even if Great Britain entered the same, she will seek legislative powers to make French a compulsory subject for every secondary school child in England and Wales.

Mrs. Thatcher

No. The curriculum is the responsibility of the local authorities and the schools. In any event, there are four official languages in the present Community: Dutch, German, Italian and French. We would expect that English would also become an official language if the Community were enlarged to include the United Kingdom.
