asked the Secretary of State for Social Services how many persons he estimates will be eligible for the new invalidity allowances at each of the three age rates; and what will be the total annual estimated expenditure for each of these age groups.

It is estimated that invalidity allowance will be payable as follows:

Rate Number qualifying Cost to the National Insurance Fund in a full year
£1 a week 60,000 £3 million
60p a week 70,000 £2 million
30p a week 220,000 £3 million
Totals 350,000 £8 million
Additionally, the introduction of the standard rate of invalidity pension for married women contributors who are chronically sick which is a part of the invalidity benefit arrangements will cost in a full year £3 million
