asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what are the figures for the amount paid in social security and unemployment benefits on the latest available day; and what were the figures on 18th June, 1970.

I presume that the hon. Member is referring to social security benefits paid to unemployed persons. In week ended 2nd April, 1971, £3.6 million was paid in unemployment benefit and £2.1 million in supplementary benefit to such persons. The amounts paid in week ended 19th June, 1970, were £2.5 million and £1.4 million respectively.
