§ Mr. Chichester-Clarkasked the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many building workers are employed directly by the Prison Service; and what was the value of their output in 1970 in maintenance and new construction, respectively.
§ Mr. CarlisleOn 31st March, the Prison Department employed 1,084 civilian building tradesmen, and 3,230 inmates were engaged on building work. In addition, 897 prison officers with trade skills have duties which include the training and supervision of these inmates. During the financial year 1970–71, the value of work carried out was £3.5 million on maintenance, and £3.75 million on new construction.
