HC Deb 04 May 1971 vol 816 cc305-6W
Mr. Hardy

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what was the average cost per bed provided for private patients incurred by each of the regional hospital boards in 1969–70.

Mr. Alison

The available in-patient costs do not distinguish between private and other patients.

Mr. Hardy

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what was the number of in-patients and out-patients treated in hospitals in England and Wales in 1969–70; and the number and proportion of those who were private patients.

Mr. Alison

There were 5,282,160 discharges and deaths during the year ended 31st December, 1969, the latest date for which information is available; of these 109,144 or 2.07 per cent. were private patients. New out-patients, excluding accident and emergency cases, number 8,054,902. Information on out-patients treated privately is not available.

Mr. Hardy

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what was the average payment made by private in-patients to cover the cost of accommodation and services in each of the regional hospital board areas of England and Wales in 1969–70.

Mr. Alison

Payments by private inpatients are made at national rates applicable to all regional hospital board areas in England and Wales, and vary according to the type of hospital and the accommodation and services provided. For example, for a single room in an acute non-teaching hospital, the patient making his own arangements for private medical treatment, the daily charge in 1969–70 was £8.25.
