§ Mr. Arthur Lewisasked the Secretary of State for Social Services how many cases have been discovered regarding illegal claims for social security benefits by Ford workers; how many of these stated cases he has thought it appropriate to prosecute; when such cases are likely 308W to take place; and whether he will make a statement.
§ Mr. DeanTo date 30 wrongful claims to Social Security benefits by Ford workers have been established. Prosecution has been authorised in seven and 11 more are under consideration. In another 12 the evidence did not warrant prosecution for fraud, but action has been taken to recover the amount overpaid.
No dates of hearing have yet been fixed.
§ Mr. Bruce-Gardyneasked the Secretary of State for Social Services what was the total cost to public funds of supplementary benefits paid to those involved in the Ford strike, and their dependants.
§ Mr. DeanA total of £626,466 was paid for the dependants of men involved in the dispute and 28 discretionary payments totalling £72 were made to strikers for their own requirements. In addition, a total of £185,843 was paid out after the men had returned to work.
