§ 25. Mr. Greville Jannerasked the Secretary of State for the Home Department whether, having regard to the provisions of the Criminal Damage Bill, he will now promote legislation to extend the powers of the Criminal Injuries Compensation Board to enable compensation to be paid out of public funds to those who suffer injury to their property through criminal acts and are unable to recover compensation from the wrongdoer concerned.
§ Mr. CarlisleNo. The Criminal Injuries Compensation Scheme was set up to compensate victims of crimes of violence. My right hon. Friend does not consider that it would be appropriate to extend the scheme to provide compensation for damage to property, where very different considerations arise.
