HC Deb 17 March 1971 vol 813 c342W
Mr. Knox

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment when he anticipates that the M6 motorway, linking the Carlisle and Penrith bypasses, will be opened.

Mr. Michael Heseltine

In the early summer.

Mr. Jopling

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment whether he can now state what effect the opening of the M6 motorway between Larnforth and Penrith has had on the volume of traffic, in particular heavy goods vehicles, using the A591 road between Kendal and Keswick.

Mr. Michael Heseltine

During the three months after the opening of this section of M6 in October, 1970, traffic on A591 decreased by about 14 per cent. compared with the same period in the previous year. Comparative figures for heavy goods vehicles only are not available at present.
