HC Deb 15 March 1971 vol 813 c234W
Mr. Mudd

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science which English counties are without either a university or a polytechnic; on what criteria polytechnic status is granted; and what additional facilities are necessary to enable the Cornwall Technical College, Pool, Cam-borne, to be granted polytechnic status.

Mr. van Straubenzee

The counties are Bedfordshire, Cheshire, Cornwall, Cumberland, Derbyshire, Dorset, Herefordshire, Huntingdon and Peterborough, Isle of Wight, Lincolnshire, Northamptonshire, Rutland, Salop, Suffolk, Westmorland, Wiltshire and Worcestershire. The main considerations taken into account in the designation of the new polytechnics were indicated in paragraph 12 of the White Paper of May, 1966, "A Plan for Polytechnics and other Colleges" (Cmnd. 3006). My right hon. Friend has no plans at present for adding to the 30 polytechnics proposed of which 27 are now in operation.
