HC Deb 11 March 1971 vol 813 c154W
Mr. Grimond

asked the Secretary of State for Employment what is the policy of the Government as to the principles upon which salaries and wages are settled in the nationalised industries and the rest of the public sector of the economy.

Mr. Bryan

The Government have impressed on employers and unions in both public and private sectors the need to secure a progressive and substantial reduction in the general level of pay settlements. There are no special principles applying only to the public sector and it is not the Government's intention to specify detailed criteria to be taken into account in negotiations.
