HC Deb 09 March 1971 vol 813 cc73-4W
Sir Clive Bossom

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment how many miles of the 228 miles of dual two-lane motorways in use in England were constructed in a way which provided for widening to three-lane carriageways at a later date.

Mr. Michael Heseltine

None. Although this does not prevent widening where this is found to be justified at a later date, for example on the M4 from Slough to Maidenhead.

Sir Clive Bossom

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment whether he will provide details of motorways being built, or prepared, which will have two-lane carriageways; and if he will indicate whether provision will be made for converting these to three-lane carriageways at a later date.

Mr. Michael Heseltine

The following trunk road motorways are programmed to be built to dual two-lane standards:

Miles
M54 Wellington Bypass (Western end 2.75
M621 Gildersome Street—Leeds 3.50
M67 Hyde Bypass (Central Section) 0.40
M56 Sharston Bypass (Section west of M63). 1.0

None of these justify provision for conversion to dual three-lane. In addition, there are about 13 miles of motorway link and spur roads programmed of which 3½ miles include provision for conversion to dual three-lane if this proves to be justified later.

The standard of construction of other motorway schemes in preparation will be finally decided when they are included in the firm programme.
