HC Deb 04 March 1971 vol 812 cc499-500W
51. Mr. Iremonger

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science if she will introduce legislation to make grants payable to students who have attained the age of responsibility, regardless of their parents' income; and if she will make a statement about the present level of income at which parents have to start contributing to their adult children's further education.

Mrs. Thatcher

A proposal to abolish the parental contribution to student grants is among a number of representations which I am studying. At present, parents are expected to contribute if their income, after certain deductions, exceeds £899.

Mr. Greville Janner

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science whether she will now increase grants for students in colleges of education.

Mrs. Thatcher

A review of student grants is in train to determine the levels appropriate for the period beginning 1st September, 1971.
