asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science how many letters have now been received in regard to the proposal to introduce admission charges at art galleries and museums; and what proportion of those letters have expressed criticism of, or opposition to, the proposal.

Up to Monday, 22nd February, 345 letters about admission charges to museums and galleries had been received in the Department of Education and Science, of which 321 expressed criticism or opposition. These included 48 letters on behalf of various organisations and 20 petitions bearing 1,767 signatures.
