asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs (1) if he will instruct Her Majesty's Ambassador to South Africa to ascertain how many African, as distinct from coloured, workers are employed at the Simonstown base;

(2) when and by whom inquiries were last undertaken by Her Majesty's Government into the number of black African, as distinct from coloured, workers employed at the Simonstown base.

I have asked Her Majesty's Ambassador at Cape Town to inquire of the South African authorities whether the information requested could be made available to us.
