HL Deb 29 July 1971 vol 323 cc788-9WA
LORD GRANVILLE OF EYE

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What action is proposed by the Department of the Environment to implement the recommendation for a Cheltenham relief road proposed in the Government feasibility study"Development Opportunities for North Gloucestershire"which would prevent further damage to that historic and residential town from excessive traffic of heavy goods vehicles, and reduce the increasing danger to pedestrians.

LORD SANDFORD

Consultants have been appointed jointly by the Gloucestershire County Council, the Cheltenham Borough Council and the Department of the Environment to consider how the traffic problems of Cheltenham may be overcome without detriment to the historic character of the town. They re-recently produced an interim report of their study for local reaction, and a final report will be published later in the year when the local views have been considered. It will then be for the local planning authority to consider what action should be taken on the recommendations in the final report.
